Last summer, I was struck by a powerful realization: if I wanted to finally bring my creative ideas to life — rather than letting them remain trapped in my head — I needed to fundamentally clear out our home and let go of the excess. That was the moment I committed to decluttering our space using the KonMari Method®.
It all began when I visited a local community SWAP event in Prague. The concept instantly captivated me. I arrived with my first carload of sorted belongings, feeling a deep sense of relief knowing these items weren’t heading for a landfill, but into the hands of people who would truly appreciate them. That swap lasted an entire week. Before I knew it, I had loaded up the car and returned five separate times.
Decluttering Was Like Peeling an Onion
Decluttering a home is an iterative process. As soon as I stripped away the first layer, the very next day revealed what else was ready to go. It was also at that same swap event where I first discovered Marie Kondo’s method.
It was at that same swap event where the seed was planted: I noticed an organized wardrobe display showcasing Marie Kondo’s principles. Curiosity sparked. I immediately downloaded the audiobook The Life-Changing Magic of Tidying Up. It took very little time to realize that this process possessed a profound, transformative dimension — something I had always intuitively felt. Marie Kondo’s philosophy became a profound source of inspiration. After completing each category, despite the physical effort involved, I felt an undeniable surge of fresh energy.
The most fascinating part of that intense week was realizing why I felt such an urgent need to let go of so much. Without creating physical space, I couldn’t create mental space. Yet right in the middle of this process — which left me deeply energized and inspired — it clicked: this work itself was my calling. It was that quintessential “aha!” moment when you’re searching for your path, only to look down and realize you’re already walking it.
Becoming a KonMari Consultant
I made the decision to take our home through an even deeper transformation. By mastering the KonMari Method®, my goal was to become a certified consultant and guide others toward that same liberating lightness — the joy of releasing what weighs us down, and the peace of living in a home that supports you rather than draining you like a chaotic storage unit.

Key takeaways from my journey:
- In the first stage, I only drew inspiration from Marie Kondo.
- In the second stage, I followed the correct process category by category, but I remained too focused on discarding.
- In the third stage, I learned to recognize what truly brings me joy, and only then did the method become truly effective.
Here are my top tips for following the KonMari Method®:
- Tidy in the exact order, category by category: Clothes, Books, Papers, Komono (miscellaneous items), and Sentimental items.
- Never move on to the next category until you have fully finished the previous one.
- Focus on what brings you joy — not on what you are throwing away.
- Leave the final organizing and storing until the very end, once all categories are complete. Only then will you have a clear overview of your available storage and be able to give every single item its rightful home. That is when the KonMari journey is truly complete.
