KonMari Basics 3: The Healing Tidying™: Decluttering Map—Your Guide to Intentional Tidying

Marie Kondo’s approach to home organizing became world-famous for folding garments into neat vertical rectangles and arranging belongings into small boxes. Yet what genuinely sets the KonMari Method™ apart from conventional cleaning techniques is sorting strictly by category in a dedicated sequence. The Healing Tidying™: Decluttering Map is what makes that journey manageable and clear.

Why does this matter? The impact is transformative. By tackling your home category by category rather than room by room, you avoid simply shifting clutter around, skipping neglected corners, or moving items from one space to another. It also forces an honest reckoning: you finally see the true volume of what you own in each category. Tracking down every stray item scattered across the house takes initial effort, but the clarity it delivers is invaluable.

Komono—The Everyday Items That Quietly Accumulate

Consider scissors as a prime example. Bringing every single pair of scissors you own into one central spot feels entirely different from keeping various pairs tucked away across the house. If you clean room by room on different days, you will likely never notice the excess. The classic household scenario: you own plenty of scissors—one in the kitchen, one in the home office, one in the sewing kit, and another floating around somewhere—yet whenever you urgently need a pair, you can never find one. We all know that feeling.

Under the KonMari Method™, you gather every pair of scissors from throughout the entire home into one pile. You select the ones you genuinely love and reach for—the pair that fits comfortably in your hand and cuts cleanly—and release the rest with gratitude. You apply this exact principle to everything (yes, genuinely everything) across your living space.

The KonMari Category Order

  • Clothing
  • Books
  • Papers
  • Komono (miscellaneous items)
  • Sentimental items

Why this specific order? Through years of hands-on practice with clients, Marie Kondo discovered that this progression builds your decision-making muscle most effectively, keeping momentum steady and intentional. It proved transformative in my own home as well.

You begin with clothing, advance through books and papers, and arrive at the vast, mysterious category known as komono. What does komono mean? It is a Japanese term translating loosely to “small items, miscellaneous goods, accessories, tools, and gadgets.” Essentially, it encompasses every item in your home that doesn’t fall into the first three categories: electronics, toiletries, cosmetics, kitchenware, hobby supplies, and everyday utensils.

For my clients and community, I developed the Healing Tidying™: Decluttering Map—a detailed guide covering every primary category alongside its granular subcategories, allowing us to move item by item. Having a clear blueprint by your side removes overwhelm: you always know the exact next step on your journey. It prevents you from drowning in piles, overlooking hidden corners, or mindlessly shuffling clutter from shelf to shelf. Every individual naturally owns different volumes of items and carries unique attachments to specific objects.

Once you navigate the vast expanse of komono, you reach the final frontier: Sentimental Items. This includes family photographs, letters, greeting cards, cherished artwork, and anything where you struggled to reach a clear decision earlier (a telltale sign that an item carries emotional weight).

Because your discernment has been honed through hours of earlier sorting, addressing these treasured keepsakes becomes the crowning milestone of the process rather than an emotional stumbling block.

Quiet, winter days naturally invite us inward, making it the ideal season to cozy up inside and bring intentional order to our sanctuary. Take that first step—momentum builds once you begin! In the next article, we will explore the foundational principles of the KonMari Method™ in greater depth.

Healing Tidying™ and the KonMari Method™

Healing Tidying™ weaves the core structural strengths of the KonMari Method™ into sorting and organization. However, my philosophy diverges from Marie Kondo’s framework in a few key areas:

  1. No universal formulas: There is no rigid, one-size-fits-all checklist that serves every family. Every home and every season of life requires a tailored approach.
  2. Flexibility over strict categories: Sorting purely by category isn’t always feasible. During demanding life transitions or postpartum periods, tackling micro-zones or single surfaces is far more grounding and realistic.
  3. Freedom from rigid sequence: You do not have to follow an uncompromising sequence to achieve meaningful order. If your intuition pulls you toward a different category first, honor that impulse.
  4. Meeting your home where it is: Healing Tidying™ begins with deep acceptance of your space exactly as it exists today. We consciously release perfectionism and performance pressure—that grounded grace is the strongest springboard for lasting change.
  5. Energetic space clearing as a foundation: Clearing the energetic atmosphere of the home before physical decluttering begins is central to Healing Tidying™. It softens resistance, allowing the physical editing to unfold with far greater ease and clarity.

The Healing Tidying™ Book

Drawing on my background as a certified consultant and years of direct client work, I brought together practical decluttering systems tailored for real, imperfect lives. This philosophy rejects rigid dogma and perfectionism in favor of a gentle, sustainable rhythm that anyone can maintain. Families and mothers with young children operate within unique energy constraints; simplifying your space must adapt to your life, not the other way around.

Explore this grounded framework in the book Healing Tidying™—you can get a sample to discover how to simplify your space, let go of emotional baggage, and restore well-being in your home.
