Spring Energy Clearing for Yourself and Your Home

Nature awakens in spring. Magazine covers urge us to embrace spring detoxes for our diets and wardrobes. Yet how we actually feel right now depends heavily on how we moved through the winter months. Did you truly allow yourself to rest, recharge, and rebuild your reserves? Even seeds wait beneath the surface of the earth for months before sending up their first green shoots. If your energy feels low, focus first on replenishing your reserves before embarking on sweeping transformations. But if you feel grounded and steady, the returning daylight naturally brings a fresh surge of vitality. It is the perfect moment for a seasonal reset—clearing not only our physical bodies, but our living spaces as well. That brings us to the natural question: where do we actually begin?

Where Do We Actually Begin?

This may sound counterintuitive, but do not start by sorting through your belongings right away. Rushing straight into decluttering means missing a powerful opportunity to leverage this seasonal shift for a deeper transformation—one that touches both your home and your inner life. There are gentler, more profound ways to begin. Let’s explore them together.

How Are You Truly Feeling, and What Weighed on You Most?

If you feel completely overwhelmed, stuck in an endless loop, and racing from one commitment to the next, subjecting yourself to an intense, demanding deep clean is the last thing you need! Your priority is to pause. Step away from analyzing the state of your living space for a moment. Try to accept your home exactly as it is right now. Do you know how many households look just like yours behind closed doors? The vast majority! Very few people document real-life clutter on social media, so let yourself off the hook.

Meaningful changes will unfold at the right time once you take action. Forcing the process while depleted or stressed only backfires. Inhale deeply, exhale completely, place a hand over your heart, and say: “I accept my home exactly as it is.” Notice the immediate relief in remembering that you are worthy and whole, even when your home feels messy.

Head into Nature and Connect with the Earth Element

When mental overload peaks, we naturally feel the urge to “air things out.” Yet what we crave isn’t just fresh air—it is the grounding stability of the Earth element. Take a walk in the woods or visit a nearby park. Turn off your phone and simply spend time immersed in nature. Notice the subtle shifts around you. Listen with all your senses. When we step outdoors wearing headphones, checking screens, or taking phone calls, we rob ourselves of the chance to recalibrate and connect deeply with the natural world.

It might feel uncomfortable at first. You may feel an almost physical impulse to turn something on, make a quick call, send a voice memo, or queue up a podcast. Be patient with yourself. Gradually, your nervous system settles, and genuine ease returns. I love finding a quiet spot to pause—sitting or lying flat on the ground, placing bare palms directly onto the soil, and receiving the healing grounding of the Earth. Her restorative energy is always available to us, and for me, it remains a profound source of nourishment. You can consciously surrender what you no longer need. Speak aloud or whisper in your heart what you are ready to release, and clarify what you wish to welcome into your life.

These grounding walks do not need to be long; even 30 mindful minutes create a tangible shift. The more time you can carve out, the better. When you step back through your front door, you will feel renewed—carrying a completely recalibrated resonance from the woods. Notice, too, how frequently you reach for screens and social feeds throughout the day. They remain a massive source of distraction and persistent internal restlessness! If you are looking for practical guidance on dialing back screen time, explore my dedicated article on digital minimalism.

“My home exhausts me. The moment I walk in, I feel the crushing weight of unfinished chores. I cannot relax in my own space.”

When this happens, home stops functioning as a sanctuary to recharge our vitality and turns into a constant source of low-grade anxiety. The practical steps below are designed to interrupt that pattern. They require minimal time, yet they catalyze immediate, tangible shifts in your everyday living space.

Clear Your Entryway First

Throw open your windows and let fresh, crisp air sweep through your entire living space. Next, examine your primary entrance and hallway—the threshold where life-force energy flows into your home—and remove everything that does not belong there.

In spring, you can pack away most of your heavier clothing, take it to the dry cleaner, or wash and store it for the winter. This clears space for lighter transitional layers. Your entryway should only hold items in active, everyday use—it shouldn’t serve as a storage dump. Clear out lingering boxes and random bags that don’t belong there. Store away heavy winter boots. When an entrance is completely crowded, it triggers an instant signal the moment you walk through the door that the entire home is in chaos. Simply restoring order to your entryway can significantly lift that weight so you don’t feel instantly exhausted when coming home.

You can also place an intentional symbol in your entryway to warmly greet you the moment you step through the door.

Perform an Energetic Space Clearing

If you feel completely drained, clearing the energetic atmosphere of your home brings rapid relief. Energy clearing is ideal whenever a space feels heavy, stagnant, or in need of a clean slate. Everything within our walls carries a energetic resonance: physical objects, houseplants, pets, and people. That energy settles into the walls and permeates the environment. Our lived emotional experiences—our arguments, anxieties, repetitive mental loops, and daily interactions—leave tangible imprints in our living spaces. The more intense or traumatic an event, the deeper that residue sinks into the room. If tension or conflict has played out in your home, the atmosphere inevitably carries that weight. Setting an intentional boundary to clear that residue creates instant spaciousness. The entire home feels visibly lighter, brighter, and free from stale emotional density. It is simple, accessible, and deeply grounding.

How to Clear Your Home with Salt

One of the simplest, most potent space-clearing methods relies on everyday coarse sea salt or Himalayan pink salt. You will need roughly 1 kg (2.2 lbs) of salt per room. Pour about a quarter of a one-kilogram (2.2 lb) bag directly onto the floor in each corner, where stagnant energy gathers most densely. Alternatively, place the salt in small bowls—just keep in mind that you shouldn’t eat from those dishes afterward; either discard them or set them aside exclusively for space clearing. You can also use recycled glass jars that you can simply toss out later. Don’t worry, salt can safely be poured directly onto the floor; as long as it stays dry and away from moisture, it won’t damage your surfaces. Feel free to sprinkle a thin line along the perimeter of your walls as well.

Salt has potent purifying properties. Leave it undisturbed for 24–48 hours to absorb unwanted energy. Then, simply vacuum or sweep it up, empty it into the trash, and take it straight outside. It is essential that it leaves your home entirely. As you place the bowls or sprinkle the salt, speak your intention: “May everything that no longer serves me leave. May everything that does not serve my highest good depart.”

If a corner is blocked by a cabinet or wardrobe, just place a bowl inside it or sprinkle the salt right next to it. It’s not rocket science! Place a bowl under your bed as well—ideally right beneath where you sleep—to clear your energy overnight. You’ll wake up feeling renewed, and the entire atmosphere of your home will feel lighter and thoroughly cleansed. It takes so little effort! Salt truly is worth its weight in gold.

I also love working with sacred incense and botanical smoke because it clears stagnant energy quickly and brings immediate relief. My personal favorites are tree resins like copal, though there are plenty of wonderful options you can explore.

If you are new to smoke clearing, I recommend starting with a bundle of white sage. White sage is native to North America (California and Mexico). You can also work with powerful herbs native to your own region. Revered, protective botanical allies like common mugwort or garden culinary sage are wonderful local options, and you can easily bundle and tie them yourself. While countless loose herbal blends exist, a simple sage stick is by far the easiest way to begin. Light the herbal bundle over a candle flame and walk the entire perimeter of your home in a clockwise direction, paying special attention to the corners.

Be sure to crack open the windows or leave a few tilted open so the unwanted energy bound to the medicinal sage smoke can freely exit the space. I recommend holding a fire-safe dish beneath the sage bundle so stray embers don’t damage your flooring or furniture. Be prepared to relight and gently fan the bundle several times, as natural sage tends to go out. As you clear the space, repeat aloud: “May everything that no longer serves me leave. May everything that does not serve my highest good depart.”

You can also sing or weave in sound tools—a drum, chime, Tibetan singing bowl, or wind chimes. Energetic space clearing using salt and sacred smoke is simple, yet deeply transformative on its own.

Support Space Clearing with Mindful Spring Cleaning

Traditionally, spring was always reserved for deep seasonal cleaning—homemakers swept away cobwebs and thoroughly reset the entire house. It’s hardly surprising: with longer days, the returning sunlight finally illuminated every hidden corner! Personally, I’ve never been a fan of manic, exhaustive cleaning marathons, especially the frantic rush before Christmas. Yet when spring arrives, even I feel a natural pull to throw open the windows and thoroughly refresh our living space.

In addition to the entryway, focus your attention on three core rooms: the bathroom, the kitchen, and the bedroom. Pace yourself wisely so you don’t exhaust yourself right out of the gate. Vacuum meticulously and wipe down surfaces, paying close attention to zones often overlooked—window frames, door moldings, forgotten nooks, the space beneath the bed, or behind the living room sofa. Clear and flush the drains in both the bathroom and kitchen. Repot your houseplants and gently wipe the dust from their leaves. Pairing energetic space clearing with intentional physical cleaning breathes fresh life into your home. This practice can serve as a restorative maintenance routine for an already organized home whenever your vitality dips, or as an empowering catalyst before you dive into a deeper decluttering journey.
